Ethnobarometer was launched in 1997 thanks to a contribution from the Human Rights Unit of the Commission of the European Union and the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation. Today our main Sponsor and funder is the Compagnia San Paolo (Italy). The Foundation Cariplo (Italy) too contributes annually to our activities.

Ethnobarometer has received contributions to specific projects also from the European Cultural Foundation (Holland), the Freudenberg Stiftung (Germany), the King Baudouin Foundation (Belgium), the Adriano Olivetti Foundation (Italy), the Luso-Americana Foundation (Portugal), the Open Society Institute of Macedonia, the Riksbankens Jubileumsfond (Sweden), the Italian Ministry for Foreign Affairs and the Social Affairs Department of the Italian Prime Minister Office. The CSS covers general costs, and provides office space and facilities.
